Emergency Situations

As with any event during the fire season there has always been the potential of an emergency situation. This is not out of normal practice, however, it should be noted that potential risks do exist. As such, environmental conditions may present a danger to Surfmoot and its participants. The Committee work hard to measure and respond to the potential dangers that these situations may present. Mitigation and management of these concerns will be addressed as follows:

Potential for a cancelled event
As Surfmoot 2012: Muppetmoot falls in the middle of the Summer period, it is possible that the event may be relocated, or even cancelled in the event of a direct fire threat or potential fire danger. In such circumstances, relocation or evacuation will be conducted in accordance with the Emergency Management Plan prepared for the 2012 event.

In such a scenario...
Committee members are responsible for evacuating the site and ensuring that all individuals have left the site - there is a possibility in certain situations that vehicles may need to remain on site, in line with procedures and triggers outlined in the Emergency Management Plan.Should you have any questions about this, please speak to the Surfmoot Chairman for further clarification. As with any Emergency and Fire planning, there is a possibility to relocate or evacuate but not a definite outcome.

Potential for a relocated event
In such conditions that the Eumeralla site is no longer acceptable as a location due to an emergency before or during the event, Surfmoot Committee will advise that a relocation will take place and will begin the co-ordination efforts to ensure a safe transition to the alternate site.

In such a scenario...
Details will be provided by the Committee to Region Chairs, who will be asked to assist coordinating the relocation effort to the alternate site. Crew Leaders should ensure that their Crew are all accounted for, and report the same to their Region Chairs, who will coordinate in turn with the Surfmoot Committee.

These are not the sole threats that are presented to Surfmoot, but rather key challenges that are unique to Surfmoot and the Summer camping season. The more informed, the better prepared, the safer the situation.

Cooking and Fire Safety

Crews are more than welcome to cook onsite. However,  all cooking must be conducted at one of the many cooking areas, designated by the taped off fire safety zones. NO COOKING MAY BE CONDUCTED ON CAMPSITES. As a potential fire risk, note that no open or solid fuel fires may be lit. In the case of total fire ban, you may not use any form of portable cooking appliance in line with the requirements of the CFA Act, further information is available at "Can I or Can't I". Please note, even though the documentation from the CFA indicates you may have a fire for warmth on a non-Total Fire Ban Day, it is still prohibited on site.

Ice will be available for purchase to keep food and eskies cold over the weekend.

Crews are also permitted to use a generator onsite, on the condition that they are stored in a trailer when in use, are appropriately spark arrested, and are muffled. EACH GENERATOR REQUIRES AT LEAST ONE (1) TAGGED AND TESTED 9kg FIRE EXTINGUISHER, appropriately classed (ABE) for a generator device. Generators must be switched off at 12am each night.

Please remember that Surfmoot has a NO GLASS POLICY. There are no exceptions to this rule. Glass items will be confiscated and disposed of immediately.
